Final project results

June 4, 2019

The project has shown that the RED Heat Engine has the potential to achieve high efficiency and low cost for converting low-grade-heat to electricity. A roadmap has been developed with the actions required to bring the technology closer to the market. The main focus is on improving further the performance of the ion exchange membranes, as this has the highest impact on the system performance. The first applications targeted are for large systems that use the waste heat from industry or from gas compression stations.

Prototype visit

On 12th March 2019 an event was organised where the progress achieved was presented and the participants had the chance to visit the prototype system conversitng waste heat to electricity.

The project goes to Athens

The RED Heat-to-Power project sent a strong representation to the conference "Desalination for the Environment: Clean Water and Energy" that was organised in on the 3–6 September 2018, in Athens, Greece. In total 5 presentations from the project were included in the programme, while the project had also space in the exhibition area.

RED Heat-to-Power at Euromembrane2018

July 20, 2018

Representatives from UPC, UNIPA and CIEMAT delivered 4 presentations about the project work at the main membrane event in Europe, the Euromembrane2018, which took place in Valencia from the 9 to the 13 of July 2018.

RED Heat-to-Power event at EUSEW2018

June 14, 2018

On the 5th of June 2018, the RED Heat-to-Power project organised a high-level event with the title “Innovation for a Clean Energy Transition.”. The event constituted a session of the Policy Conference of EUSEW 2018, which took place in Brussels between 5 and 7 June. The RED Heat-to-Power project co-organised the event with the following organisations:

  • United Nations Industrial Development Organization
  • AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals
  • CEPI - Confederation of European Paper Industries
     

What membrane properties are important for RED?

Exergy Analysis paper presented in Dubrovnic

A paper about the exergy analysis carried out within the project was presented at the "12th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems", which was organised on the 4 to 8 of October 2017 in Dubrovnic, Croatia.

Presentation at heat transfer conference

The 35th UIT Heat Transfer Conference took place on the 25 to 27 of June 2017. The paper "Influence of the boundary conditions on heat or mass transfer in complex channels" was presented by UNIPA, on the relevant work they carried out within the project.

Discussing the future of RED at EUSEW2017

Prof Giorgio Micale from UNIPA represented the RED-Heat-to-Power project at the event "PROGRESS IN UPSCALING SALINITY GRADIENT POWER". The event was organised within the Sustainable Energy week 2017 in Brussels.

The project at EuroMed2017

RED Heat-to-Power had a strong presence at the EuroMed2018, which was organised by EDS in Tel-Aviv on 9 - 12 of May 2017. There were two presentations by CIEMAT, while UNIPA delivered two presentations and two posters.
